This weekend the state joins together to celebrate AFL Kids First Round (Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th May) to like to remind all clubs and parents to set positive example both on and off the field.
AFL Kids First is a program that guides parents and supporters towards positive behaviour to ensure everyone – particularly children - obtain maximum benefit and enjoyment from their football.
The program celebrates the children who participate in junior AFL and the positive example parents set both on and off the field. Parents play an important role in children’s sporting activities, and while barracking and wanting your child to perform well is human nature, it needs to be done in a responsible manner.
Reinforcing AFL Kid First messages at all clubs ensure that the league achieves family friendly, quality environments for our members.
This weekend, parents can demonstrate positive behaviour by:
• Focussing on the child’s efforts and self-esteem rather than whether they win or lose
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or for the team losing a game
• Show appreciation of volunteer coaches, umpires, officials and administrators – without them your child could not participate
Resources are online to easily enable club volunteers to conduct the parent session and promote the program around the club. For resources and information, visit http://www.aflq.com.au/index.php?id=760
