We look at the Sunday winners in round 4 of the Peter Jackson VFL, Port Melbourne and Geelong:
PORT MELBOURNE d NORTHERN BLUES: Port Melbourne inflicted the Northern Blues first loss for season 2013, recording a 16-point win over the Blues at Preston City Oval. The Borough stated their intentions early with the opening three goals, and it took Northern till the 14 minute mark of the term to kick their first goal through Tom Bell who finished the day with three.
Port suffered the loss of leading goal kicker Dean Galea in the first term after the bigman had already kicked two goals. He left the field with a dislocated shoulder. The change of structure up forward for Port Melbourne upset their momentum, as the Northern Blues took the advantage in the second quarter kicking three unanswered goals to take the half time lead.
While the Blues got out to a 15-point lead in the third term, Port Melbourne were never out of the hunt, as they kicked the last three of the third term to take the lead at three quarter time. It was a lead that they would not relinquish, getting out to as much as 27 points before the Blues fought back to cut the final margin to 16 points.
Ryan Gale led the goals for Port with three, with five players kicking two goals each for the Borough. Chris Cain (2 goals), Toby Thoolen and Sam Pleming were their best. For Northern Blues, Tom Bell was their best with three goals and 23 disposals, along with David Ellard (20), Nick Meese and Adam Marcon (20). Returning from injury Jarrad Waite finished with 12 disposals, taking six marks and kicking 0.2.
GEELONG d FRANKSTON: Geelong has joined Casey Scorpions as the only remaining undefeated sides in the competition, running away from Frankston in the final term to record a 79 point win.
After a strong start by the Cats – kicking the first four goals of the game - the Dolphins hit back and remained competitive throughout the first three quarters. The Dolphins pulled back within 16 points during the third term, but the Cats stepped up when it counted kicking 10 unanswered goals to finish the game.
Joel Hamling returned to form with six goals, five of them during the final term, whilst Josh Hunt continued his good VFL form from the previous round and was amongst the best along with Cam Eardley (3 goals), Matt Sully in defence and Jordan Schroder. While Nathan Vardy made a successful return with a goal and some telling marks, news was not as good for Jackson Sheringham in the first half, leaving the field with a shoulder injury, not returning to the field.
For Frankston David Gallagher was the only multiple goal kicker for the afternoon with two goals, and has proved in the opening rounds his year away from the VFL has not had an impact on his form. Gallagher was amongst the best for the Dolphins, along with Russ Gabriel, Chris Irving and Riley Heddles.
