TRENT SLATTER | THE CHRONICLE | 23 APRIL 2013
NOT even a 12-hour trip home could dampen the spirits of Goondiwindi after notching its first win of the AFL Darling Downs season at the weekend.
The Hawks were flying high following their impressive 19.19 (133) to 10.14 (74) win over South Burnett in Kingaroy.
But the celebrations soon hit as snag when the team bus broke down just 15km into the trip home.
The team was stranded until a new bus arrived and they finally rolled into Goondiwindi again at 5am on Sunday morning.
The Hawks already faced a more than 600km round trip before the breakdown but coach Brenton Jardine said the players weren't deterred.
"They were still pretty happy. It didn't slow them down at all," he said.
Goondiwindi has enjoyed a strong start to 2013 after collecting the wooden spoon last season.
Jardine credited a consistent effort at training every week for the turnaround.
"Everyone is keen to train every week. It's all starting to happen for us," he said.
"We won't be getting the wooden spoon again, that's for sure."
