Charlton set the pace early in the opening term when they made many forward moves, with a lot being rebounded by the Redbacks backmen. The Navy Blues looked to be a very quick and skilful side in the opening quarter and this will be a worry to all opposition as we go deeper into our season. Wedderburn suffered a heavy blow when they lost Rohan McHugh and Jono Davidson before quarter time and both were ruled out for the rest of the game. Charlton held a 10-point lead at the first change and the confidence of the home side was running high.
Term two seen the Charlton side take complete control of the game; the Redbacks could not match it with the Navies and a couple of 50-metre penalties awarded against them didn’t help their cause. Charlton added a further six goals for the quarter while holding Wedderburn to one goal six points. The Redbacks should have been a little closer at the main break, but bad kicking from set shots didn’t help and at half time trailed by 35-points.
Both sides found it hard to score in the third term, Wedderburn trying resurrect the damage of the first half, made some positional changes which in general field play appeared to work but they were let down again in the scoring department and were 42-points behind the home side with only a term to be played and the Redbacks were looking defeat in the eye as they went to the last huddle.
With nothing to lose Wedderburn were taking it right up to Charlton in the early part of the quarter with a couple of goals reducing the deficit. The Navy Blues regrouped and responded to the challenge of the Redbacks. McLean, who had been good all day for the Navies, goaled mid- term, and this appeared to get the home side going again. Charlton outscored their opposition again in the last quarter to run out good winners at the final siren by 50-points, this would be the first heavy defeat that the Redbacks would have encountered for a long time, while Wedderburn lick their wounds the Navy Blues will build on their wins and look ahead to their meeting with the Demons next week.

Birchip-Watchem v Boort
Both sides got away to a good start at George Cartwright Oval Birchip were the ball rebounded between the two half back lines for the majority of the opening term. Boort got the points in the finish with a lead of 11-points at the first change. Both sides had introduced some new talent into their respective teams and will be better for the run so improvement gauged on the first quarter gave the indication that some improvement would not be far away for both sides.
Boort were a little keener that the Bulls in this quarter and the proof was seen in their game plan and on the scoreboard. The Magpies had the better of the scoring and would extend their opening quarters lead out to 30-points at the main break. Boort’s new players were right in the mix and were gaining many possessions which helped set up this commanding lead at the half way mark.
In the third quarter the Bulls made an effort to pull back the lead of the visitors and they were able to reduce that margin back by 9-points at the last change, Boort of the other hand could have extended their lead, but a couple of gettable goals didn’t get the desired result.
The last term turned out to be fairly even with both sides kicking a couple of majors but the pace of the game had slowed down a lot from the earlier three quarters with both sides looking for the final bell to ring and when it finally came the Magpies had recorded their first win for the year by 18-points.

St Arnaud v Wycheproof-Narraport
In another high scoring first quarter, the Demons racked up the possessions and capped off some good work to outscore the Saints 7-goals to 2-goals and establish a 30 point lead at the first change. Ricky Allan and Corey Jones, being the main contributors to the Demons lead at quarter time.
Both sides could only manage two goals in the second quarter as the game became a bit of a slog. No side was able gain any advantage in this term with the warmer playing conditions telling on both sides. Going to half time leading by 29-points, the Demons would have been fairly pleased with their efforts to this point and reasonably confident that they could go on in the second half and take the points after a solid first half.
After the long break the Saints came out a different side as they tightened up on their opponents all over the ground, this proved to be very rewarding as they held the Demons to just 2-points for the term, while they kicked 5-8 for the quarter. Had the Saints kicked accurately the margin at the last change could have and should have been greater than the 7-point lead the held with a quarter to go.
In what would appear to be a game of two halves St Arnaud were certainly going to take up their turn in the scoring department in the final term. The Saints attacked the goals at every opportunity kicking seven last quarter goals to the Demons single goal. It would have been disappointing for the Demons after hold a 29-point lead at the main break to see the game slip and slip by such a big margin which would be 45-points at the final siren, a turn around by the talented Saints of 74-points. The win of the Saints see’s all sides, except Birchip-Watchem with a win to their credit after two rounds.
