In the midst of pre-season, Leigh Brain saw a trait in Hayden Washington previous coaches had seemingly overlooked.
Brain felt the towering 18-year-old could be of nuisance value as a full forward for Manly Wolves in the AFL Sydney Premier Division given his height and physicality.
After two rounds the gamble has paid off, with Washington the leading sharpshooter in the competition after booting 10 goals in Manly’s wins against Balmain and Illawarra.
“He is a handy defender but I noticed in training he has an eye for goal,” Brain said.
“I gave Hayden an opportunity to show what he can do and he has been sensational.”
Washington’s enthusiasm has rubbed off on his teammates.
Tipped to struggled after their promotion, the Wolves have hit the ground running, topping the league on percentages.
“We are not getting carried away after two games, but I am happy with how we are playing,” Brain said.
“This Saturday is a real test. Pennant Hills are always strong; the boys know it will be physical.
“We are playing at home under lights for the first time this year, (so) hopefully we have a big crowd cheering us on.”
First grade begins at 4.10pm at Weldon Oval in Curl Curl.
