A really intense match played by Port Melbourne showed that they are back in form, but by only just. Philippe Perez reports on Port Melbourne recording their first win of the season.
"It wasn't the most perfect game today, but we made sure that we didn't waver at all and simply took on those chances when they came to us later on," Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said after the game.
Throughout the match the team kept up with the Box Hill Hawks, not letting the lead get to no more than 4 goals at any point during the match.
The game was an arm wrestle between the two teams for most of the match, and the determination of both sides was highlighted in the final term by a collision between Hawk Brian Lake and Port’s Tom Langford, with both men committed to the ball without wanting to give anything away.
In the end the Borough had markedly improved from the previous rounds effort and while there was some room for improvement, the team can take a lot from the performance.
Dean Galea and Josh Scipione both slotted in 4 goals, with two of Scipione’s from huge bombs outside of the fifty.
It can be said that these two were the best on field but Ayres wanted to ensure that his teams defending was credited as well.
"(John) Baird and (Wayde) Skipper really did well for us in the back, and I couldn't ask for more from them really in comparison to last," Ayres said.
”We stuck to the plan, and just made sure we had everything together. We never gave up hope."
Scipione had similar thoughts, as he highlight post-match on 3WBC.
"That's not what we [stood] for last week, what we dished up. The whole theme of the week was just to respond and that's what we did today."
Port Melbourne this weekend head to Frankston to take on the Dolphins on Sunday in the Peter Jackson VFL Radio game.
