It was a mixed weekend for the league's newest clubs.
South Burnett opened their season with a hard-fought 15.9 (99) to 9.7 (61) win against Lockyer Valley. But Chinchilla couldn't snatch a victory in its historic first game, suffering a 28.18 (174) to 5.3 (33) thrashing at the hands of Dalby.
South Toowoomba still has some room for improvement after a scrappy 9.20 (74) to 9.8 (62) win over the Toowoomba Tigers in Saturday's AFL Darling Downs grand final replay at Rockville Park.
The Bombers suffered from a serious case of the yips in their first game of the season. Souths kicked just 1.10 to the Tigers' 2.2 in the first quarter as they failed to convert their wealth of possession into points.
Their wayward kicking kept the Tigers in the contest and Souths led by just one point at the final change. But a strong finish was enough to get the Bombers across the line and hand the three-time defending premiers a first-up loss.
In the other round one matches, Warwick and Highfields showed they both have plenty to offer this season after a tight battle at Kratzke Oval.
Highfields held a 12-point lead at halftime but it was the Redbacks who stormed home to win 11.11 (77) to 10.13 (73).
Heath Gniel's seven-goal haul booted University to victory 13.10 (88) to 10.12 (73) against last year's wooden spooners Goondiwindi who were impressive in defeat.
