Nelson Sparks Win the South Island Derby
Nelson Sparks Win the South Island Derby
7 April 2013, Rotorua Energy Events Centre
The Canterbury Wildcats were unable to turn the tide against Nelson Sparks on Sunday, as an early lead was taken from them. The Wildcats weren’t able to get closer than 6, going on to eventually lose by 10, 55-45.
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, excellent defence was played in kind by the Sparks, who were able to hold the Wildcats to a dismal 24% field goal shooting performance, along with the Sparks getting offensive rebounds 41% of the time. Pip Connell was the only player for the Wildcats to reach double figures, hitting two free throws in the final few seconds to reach 10 points, while youngster Tessa Boagni grabbed 11 Rebounds.
For the Sparks, Nicki Rampton (wife of Tony Rampton) was able to provide a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds (including 7 on the offensive end). Captain Jodi Hikuroa was limited to 13% shooting, but still scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
The Wildcats will use the next few weeks to get healthy, before hosting round two of the tournament. Where they will be desperate to improve their standings, and make it into the top six to qualify for the Championship Stage of the tournament. Hopefully the homecourt advantage at Cowles Stadium will give the Wildcats some extra lift and help them their record from 1-3. Come along and watch Wildcats play on May 3-5 (schedule of the games can be found here). First up will be the Taranaki Thunder, at 7pm on the Friday.
