Round one of the Peter Jackson VFL has now been completed, with Essendon, Collingwood, Casey Scorpions and Coburg sitting in the top four spots at the end of the round.
We recap how the Sunday VFL results were achieved:
CASEY SCORPIONS v FRANKSTON: Casey returned to familiar territory at the end of round one, sitting in the top four of the Peter Jackson VFL ladder after a 68 point win over local rivals Frankston. After a first quarter shoot out which produced 14 goals, Casey took their 11 point quarter time lead and did not look back, extending their margin at every change. Luke Tapscott was the main scorer with six goals to go with his 22 disposals, whilst 23rd player Ben Kearns made a favourable debut with five goals. With Khan Haretuku missing from the Dolphins forwardline, Michael Lourey kicked 4.4 and was supported by Noble Park recruit Ziggie Alwan with three. The Scorpions dominated in the middle, with James Magner (34 disposals) and Tom Couch (32) doing most of the damage, along with good contributions from Mitch Gent (24) and Cam Pedersen (21).
BOX HILL HAWKS v PORT MELBOURNE: Port Melbourne continued their recent dominance of the Box Hill Hawks, leaving their best football to the second half to steal the game in time on of the final quarter to run out four point victors. After Box Hill led by 19 points at half time, Port Melbourne kicked eight goals to four in the second half to claim their first points of 2013. Josh Muling gave the Borough the lead as the clock ticked into time on in the final term, and despite the Hawks having opportunities through Matt Spangher (2 goals) and Luke Lowden (3), the Hawks were unable to claim a much needed goal in time on. Dean Galea had the better of his dual with Brian Lake kicking four goals, before Lake moved forward in the final term. Chris Cain was amongst the best for Port across half forward, whilst Mitch Wooffindin, John Baird and Josh Scipione gave their side drive out of the middle.
COBURG v SANDRINGHAM: Coburg showed they will not be a team to be taken lightly in 2013, as they recorded a 32 point win over Sandringham. After trailing at quarter time, Coburg were able to keep Sandringham at arm’s length for the rest of the contest, producing a five goal to two second term, on the back of strong work up forward by new Tigers Liam McBean (4 goals) and Aaron Edwards (4). It was the new Richmond recruits that help Coburg to their round one win, with Chris Knights the leading stats getter with 41 disposals, and big Orren Stephenson (pictured) had 35 hitouts in the ruck. For the Zebras, Trent Dennis Lane was their leading goal kicker with five majors from his nine disposals, whilst Tom Curren (24), Sam Dunnell (16), Adam Cockie and Nathan Wright (13) were amongst their best.
