We are now four games into the split round one of the Peter Jackson VFL, after Geelong defeated Williamstown by 8-points last weekend.
Here's a brief recap of the games so far this weekend:
BENDIGO vs ESSENDON: The split round action kicked off Friday night under lights with former aligned sides Bendigo and Essendon going head to head at Queen Elizabeth Oval. The Bombers featured 20 AFL listed players, as they marked their first VFL game since 2002 with a 90 point victory. Essendon stated their intentions early with a six goal to nil first term, but the main damage was done with a 10 goal to one third term. Bombers' Jason Winderlich headed to the bench at three quarter time, his game complete with 8-goals. Winderlich was well supported with four goals from Joe Daniher, with the likes of Jason Ashby (27 possessions), Leroy Jetta (34) and Travis Colyer (28) ensuring delivery from the midfield. For Bendigo, Matt Farrelly, Daniel Toman and Daniel McLinden were amongst their best, with Nathan Beck their leading goal kicker with two.
COLLINGWOOD vs NORTH BALLARAT: In a similar story to Essendon, Collingwood fielded a strong AFL contingent in the VFL on Saturday as the Magpies claimed a 52 point win over North Ballarat. The likes of Alan Didak (21 disposals), Josh Thomas (26), Alex Fasolo (25), Dale Thomas (24) and Ben Hudson (22 & 28 hitouts) led the way for the Magpies, along with rookie Kyle Martin who continued where he left off last season with Frankston in the VFL, leading all disposals with 33. Inaccuracy hampered the Roosters, especially in the second term, as Collingwood jumped out to a 27 point half time lead having kicked 5.3 to North Ballarat's 1.6 for the term. The margin only got as close as 32 points in the second half, as the likes of Jackson Paine (4 goals), Kyle Martin (3) and Jarrod Witts (3) did the damage in the forward line. Down the other end Pat Nicholls was the only multiple goal scorer for the Roosters, with Aaron Black, Cam Richardson and Matt Austin amongst their best.
WERRIBEE vs NORTHERN BLUES: After a crushing win over Port Melbourne last weekend, Werribee Tigers were brought back to earth this weekend by the Northern Blues, who defeated the Tigers by 15 points under lights. The Blues led for all but the first few minutes of the game, and despite a late rally from Werribee which saw them get within 8-points in the final term, the visitors had the answers to open their season on a positive note. Ed Curnow was the chief destroyer in the middle with 30 disposals, well supported by 2012 best and fairest Adam Marcon (27), Heath Scotland (23) and Jaryd Cachia (22). The Blues benefited from first use of the ball via Robbie Warnock who had the better of the ruck dual with Tigers' Majak Daw and Daniel Currie. Tyson Thomas was the leading goal kicker for the Blues with 5, whilst down the other end Aaron Joseph kept Werribee key forward Ben Warren to just two goals after his 11-goal haul last weekend. Scott Coulston continued his good start to his VFL career with four goals for Werribee, with Jacob Graham, Jarred Moore and Luke McDonald amongst their best.
