The AFL Sydney Womens’ competition is set for another exciting season with divisionalisation and new teams the forefront of growth in 2013.
AFL NSW/ACT Female Programs Manager, Libby Sadler sees the move to two divisions this season as a positive.
“With AFL Sydney Womens’ moving to two divisions in 2013 all teams will be given a great opportunity to battle for their respective flags,” she said.
“On average a new women’s team has joined to competition each year since 2010 with Maroubra Saints/Randwick City Angels being the first team in Sydney to complete the female player pathway.”
Sadler is looking to the Youth Girls competition as a way to take further steps forward heading into the future.
“The youth girl’s competition in Sydney is growing from strength to strength,” she said.
“We are now starting to see the benefits of youth girls football in our senior leagues as young players make the transition and these women already have 50 or more games under their belts before they step into women’s footy.”
When asked for the team to beat in the womens’ competition this year, Sadler couldn’t go past the dominant side of the past few seasons.
“In Division 1 you can’t go past the reigning premiers, Balmain Dockers,” Sadler believes.
“With their core of experienced players and coaching staff they are always going to be a tough team to beat.
“That being said many Division 1 clubs have recruited well in the off season and the talent will increase directly in line with match experience.”
The other highlight of the season is the AFL National Women’s Championships from June 16 – 23, in Cairns, where the NSW Team is composed of players from the AFL Sydney Women’s competition.
