BASKETBALL REFEREE EDUCATION SESSION

Benn McDonald, leading Adelaide Basketball referee, ran an interesting education session for local referees last Saturday morning. He drew on his vast experience and achievements officiating in NBL, WNBL and SEABL games over many seasons.

He addressed topics such as positioning and movement as well as providing tips on how to gain self-confidence to call the first infringement. He also spoke of the attitude he encourages umpires to adopt when refereeing; one of trying to work together with players and coaches. An effective way in which to manage mistakes before an audience produced some interesting and at time amusing discussion.

Career pathways and opportunities were explained and participants were encouraged to continue on a long term basis. His presentation was motivational for all and generated healthy interaction during the session.
