Solomon Islands Baskteball Activate Competition Year

Solomon Islands activated their basketball year with action from three different categories: wheel chair basketball, high school competition and the open challenge.


The Honiara Basketball Association (HBA)made sure that the year began on a high note by showcasing three different exhibition matches highlighting the different categories that will be featured throughout the year.


Wheel Chair basketball is a totally new sport for many Solomon Islanders, but the Honiara public were very supportive towards people with disabilities, as they showed on the court that sport was for everyone. This is the second time the public were able to witness the event. This was followed by an eagerly antciapited match between High School rivals: Selwyn College and King Geoprge National Secondary. The match which was played under the boys category featured some new and upcoming talents, with a number of young players stepping up and showcasing their skills, as some of them will be scouted for the Under 19 national training squad.

The main match of the day featured last years unbeaten finalists and champions, the Marist Basketbal Club (pictured) going against the Honiara select side. Both sides were neck to neck from the first to the third quarter before Marist stamped its authority in the final quarter; going ahead and winning by 50 points to 40.

Basketball supporters and fans came in numbers to the Multi-purpose hall over the weekend to witness the start of the season, and it is anticpated that the year promises to be another exciting one as basketball is once again setting the tone for its revivial in the country.
