Twenty four of the best Under 16 AFL footballers from within the Sutherland & St. George area participated in the first session of the St. George AFL Academy last Wednesday evening at the St. George AFC Centre of Excellence at Olds Park in Peakhurst.
The 24 boys were nominated by their respective junior clubs and then put through a series of intensive training drills by the St. George coaches.
Led by former Sydney Swans player and current AFL NSW/ACT State Coach Jason Saddington, the training drills included a timed 20 metre sprint, and video taping of each boys kicking technique for later feedback by the coaches.
Other coaches conducting training sessions included Sydney Swans Academy Coach Mick Keys, and AFL NSW/ACT Community Development Manager Kieran Donohue.
A pleasing aspect of the Academy boys that was noted by the coaches was the good skill level and the intensity with which the squad trained.
Academy training sessions are held monthly throughout the AFL season with the next session scheduled for the 3rd April 2013.
