The Highfields Lions are still welcoming new senior players looking to give Australian Football a crack in season 2013.
The Highfields Lions Football Club introduced a senior side for the first time in 2010 and has always been on the verge of making finals. The club is looking to build on a successful 2012 and push one place higher into the expanded final five finals series.
The club, based out of Kratzke Oval in Highfields has lost a little bit of experience going into season 2013 with a number of senior players taking a season off due to personal commitments and to rest their bodies. The club has also lost their big signing of the off-season in Drew Dale as A Grade coach due to work commitments.
Despite a couple of losses, it has helped open the door for anyone who is willing to give the game a go, either as a past player or someone wanting to try the sport for the first time.
“There is an opportunity now for new or existing players to step up into the captaincy or leadership role of the fastest growing club in the league”
A Grade coach Ben Adams highlights that although some fitness is required, it is not as tough as it is made out to be.
“We have a great bunch of blokes out here that love to kick the footy and a commitment to playing good football. When you all share a common interest the cold nights on the track and the hard hits make it all worthwhile” says Adams.
“You don’t have to be an elite midfielder to have a run around. Right now we have spots available and are keen to talk to anyone wanting to take an opportunity at playing senior football.”
“Make no mistake we are here to be competitive and win games, we are not here just to make up the numbers.”
The club plays its first match on April 6th against the Warwick Redbacks, the club whose spot they are trying to take in the final five. Although it’s only one game into the season, an early win will help to build momentum and gain the upper hand on what is set to be a very tight battle to make it into September action.
The club trains on Tuesday & Thursday nights from 6:00pm at Kratzke Oval in Highfields.
