News on the Lakers Under 16 and 18 Boys and Girls’ performances in the Victoria Basketball Country Division 1 and 2 Championships played in Bendigo over the weekend.

The best Under 16 and 18 basketballers from all regions of Country Victoria assembled in Bendigo for the annual Division 1 and 2 Championships. Country Victoria recognised the capabilities of the current Junior Lakers teams and invited the four teams to compete in the premier regional event in junior basketball in that state.

The Lakers Under 16 Girls, under Coach Bryan Green, finished with an outstanding record of runner-up in Division 1 of that age group. They were runner-up to a big and classy Geelong, 33-52.They defeated two powerhouses of Country Victoria on the way to the title game;  Ballarat 44-29 in the quarter final and Bendigo 31-26 in the semi-final.

The Lakers teams also matched it with the best in the very high standard Under 18 competitions. Both teams made it through to the semi-finals. The Lakers Women finished top of their Pool, defeating Bendigo and Geelong and then defeated Mildura 44-36 in the quarter final. They met tough opposition in the semi-final in Traralgon with an Australian squad member in the line-up. The Lakers led by 8 early in the third quarter but then the T-Birds moved into top gear and took control, holding the Lakers scoreless for around 12 minutes. Final scores were 41-57.

The Lakers Under 18 Men finished second in their Pool and then defeated Seymour a Pool leader 61-59 in the quarters. One of the class sides of the Championships, Geelong proved too strong for the Lakers in the semi-final.

The Lakers Under 16 Boys took a little time to adapt to the level of competition but improved as the weekend went on. They defeated Moe 36-33 in the Quarter final but went down 33-42 to arch rival Hamilton in the semi-final.

Overall this was a most pleasing outcome for the Lakers’ teams and will serve as solid preparation for the coming SA Country Basketball junior Championships next month.
