KERRY O'NEILL | GATTON, LOCKYER & BRISBANE VALLEY STAR | WEDNESDAY 20 FEBRUARY
THERE was no doubting the popularity of Brisbane Lions players Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett when they returned to Grantham State School last week.
Not only did the children get to kick a football around with their heroes, but the day also saw the presentation of badges and shirts to the 15 school captains as part of a presentation ceremony at the school on Friday.
Speaking at the school assembly, Jonathan spoke of the importance of leadership and mateship, which were qualities students could rely on through high school and through life. He also spoke of how well the school was doing after visiting just after the 2011 floods.
"You're all going great," he said.
"When we visited before (2011) the place looked like a bomb had hit it, but seeing the place today shows just how strong the community spirit is."
School principal Rebecca Cavanagh said the visit proved to be a positive experience for the school and students.
"The kids really enjoyed it," she said.
"It was great for our school community to see them return, two years later."
The Lions' visit to the Grantham State School was part of a two-day tour through the Lockyer Valley.
They visited St Mary's Catholic School, Laidley and held a coaching forum at the Lockyer Demons ground on Saturday.
