Poe at ease in field of dreams

For much of his life, Poe Thein Htoo Kolo thought he would never experience the true meaning of freedom.

Trapped in a refugee camp for the first 14 years of his life, Poe considered he would always be confined to poverty.

"I always wanted to go to another country," the 17-year-old said.

"I love Burma but we couldn't stay. It was too dangerous."

His parents and the new-born Poe abandoned their country of birth as conflict with the Burmese army escalated. They crossed the border to Thailand, joining hundreds of refugees at the Karenni Camp 2.

It was a safe haven as fighting between armed resistance groups and the Burmese military left a trail of destruction.
