Sydney University is happy to announce the appointment of Tom Morrison to the position of Senior Development & Premier Division Coach for the upcoming 2013 season.
Tom brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach, having started his football career in Western Australia including four years in the WAFL. Injury concerns eventually forced Tom to rethink his playing and furthering his career in as a coach.
Tom, a friend of current High Performance Manager Tom Ayton, has a strong focus on the developmental side of the game and he aims to “… ensure those playing Premier Division receive the guidance required to step up to NEAFL level”.
Tom has most recently spent time coaching at WAFL club, Claremont Football Club with positions varying from Colts Coach to the Head Coach of the Claremont Academy in 2011.
SUANFC Club President Chas Wilkinson was very impressed with Tom’s previous coaching experience and in particular, his focus on developing players. “It’s a very strong resume for someone looking to promote an environment focused on player development”, said Wilkinson.
“This developmental mentality is an outstanding fit for us, as the Club aims to become a player development partner to the AFL”, said Wilkinson.
Bringing junior and senior football coaching experience, across both community and State League football, Tom is now pleased to be working with a well known and respected club such as SUANFC. Tom was attracted to the position by what he thinks is as a strong current roster and the experience of Senior NEAFL Coach Daniel Gilmore.
The focus of the Premier Division and development teams is to see “our under 18 and development level players progress to NEAFL and on to careers with AFL clubs”, said Wilkinson. He continued, “As much as we aspire to develop players, our University club aims to produce an environment from which coaches also develop professionally.
“Tom’s professional trajectory to date, and the learnings our environment offers, mean he will not only develop, but will also add to our club environment and our players’ development.”
