AFL Cairns will celebrate 2013 as the "year of women in footy" by tonight playing the first games under lights at Cazalys in the history of the women's league. The first match, between North Cairns and Manunda, will start at 6.30pm and be followed by South Cairns and Centrals at 8pm. AFL Cairns boss Gary Young said there were many local examples that demonstrated teh impact women had on the sport. "Critical roles such as umpires, committee members, coaches, trainers, game-day helpers and supporters are held by mums, wives, girlfriends, sisters and passionate supporters," he said. "Often they are forgotten or are occasionally commended in the hurly burly of what is often incorrectly seen as a game for blokes."
