The inaugural season of Cadbury AFL 9s Toowoomba has been completed with the Loose Ball Gets claiming an 11 point victory over the Whippersnappers.
Leading into the match the Whippersnappers had twice beaten the Loose Ball Gets to remain undefeated through 9 matches, including a tight 16 point win in the Semi Final.
The Whippersnappers fielded a very skillful team made up of females who have played state representative football and many of the Under 18 Crows. The Loose Ball Gets were primarily made up of University Cougars who really struggled to kick accurately in front of goal. In both previous match-ups the winning team had less scoring shots recorded.
Leading into the match the Whippersnappers suffered the loss of a number of their players, including key forward Nathan Mills and were forced to start the match one players short. However, kicking with a very slight breeze they took a half time lead of 13 points through a late goal to Katrina Kelly.
For much of the second half the match was a tight tussle with very little scoring. Even a heavy collision between Tasman Myles & Christopher Davis, resulting in the latter going off the field did nothing to break the deadlock. It wasn't until a goal to Tammy Pukallus closely follwed by Matt Authers and the Loose Ball Gets took a narrow lead.
A Marnie McGorm snap boucned the wrong side of the post in the dying minutes but eventually the Whippernsnappers had been dealt their first loss in the Grand Final.
The Cadbury AFL 9s Toowoomba competition was a fantastically run competition which introduced many new people to a playing capacity of the sport.
