The South Burnett Saints AFC held their first official training session on Tuesday night, only days after the club was officially granted entry into the AFL Darling Downs Junior and Senior competitions.
Inaugural Saints coach Steve Humbler spoke with DDAFLQ staff on what they would like to achieve in their first season competing in the Allied Pickfords Cup.
“We want to be competitive, that is for sure but we also want to build a culture for the club that sets the Saints up for many years,” Humbler stated before the training session kicked off.
Though it may only be early December, the Saints are hitting the track two days a week in preparation for their much anticipated Round 1 clash against whichever club that may be. With thirty-five players already registered to the senior squad, the Saints definitely won’t be pushovers in their first season.
After watching the Saints train for the first time, AFL Queensland Regional Manager Keith Webb was impressed at the already established skill level and how close the group is, so early on.
“They have impressed me, the skill level of the Saints squad who majority come from a non-Aussie Rules background is very impressive and you can already see how close the group is,” Webb told darlingdowns.aflq.com.au.
“South Burnett will definitely cause a few upsets during the upcoming Allied Pickfords Cup season and visiting sides won’t want to take them lightly”.
“Numbers are looking good at this stage and with our Development Coordinator Jeff Neumann planning the NAB AFL Auskick program and various Primary, secondary school programs early in 2013 the South Burnett Saints could well be a force in 2013,” Webb added.
South Burnett will be training right up until the week before Christmas, before having a few weeks off and then they will be back on the track in early January.
