Striker Rose Kalkaua was surprised when a counter-attack in the 60th minute of play saw the ball reach her on the right hand of the Fiji 25 metre mark and with the advancing Fijian goalkeeper; the Ni Vanuatu player flicked the ball above the keeper and it dipped into the empty Fijian goalmouth.
It was a moment to cherish for the Vanuatu side which had just jetted into Fiji two hours before their match.
The much polished Fijian team took a 10 nil at the break but could only manage seven in the second half.
The top scores for Fiji were Litiana Sogotubu with four and Maxine Browne with three and Catherine Thaggard chipped in with two.
Vanuatu manager Relvie Polapa was happy with the outcome despite the drubbing.
“It is the first time our girls are playing in a full size pitch and we have just been playing for the last five months. Our youngest player is 13,” Polapa said.
Fijian coach Shaun Corrie was delighted with the win.
“A win is a win but I must take my hat off for Vanuatu scoring a goal against us.”
The Fiji women’s team faces New Zealand Maori in a tougher encounter on Monday morning while Vanuatu faces Samoa.
