“We played a great second half.”
Aussie coach Jaitinda Singh thanked Vanuatu for giving them a good game having just arrived for the tournament.
“Big congratulations to Vanuatu, they had a hard trip and that you very much to them. It’s a good tournament.
I was very disappointed with our game, we had a couple of cards we should not have had,” Singh said.
The match got off to a fast pace under scorching sun at the National Hockey Center and many were expecting a one-sided affair.
The Australians who easily scored 15-0 last year could only manage 6 in the first spell and three in the second.
Vanuatu scored a historic lone goal in the 45th minute.
“We didn’t have time to warm-up. We just had to drop our bags and change and run into the field. Oh it’s an amazing moment scoring a goal against Australia, “ said Robinson a former Victorian State rep.
Shaun Dawson and Aaron Thompson scored two goals each for the Australians and one each to Kyhle Rush, Joshua Gregory, Jyi Connolly, Dean Robertson and Timothy Luscombe.
Nalpinie Iasi scored Vanuatu’s lone goal.
