Cadbury AFL 9s is the newest form of Australian Football and is played between mixed 9-a-side teams and is completely non-contact.
After a social trial run in the beginning of 2012 with 4 teams, the competition has exploded to 7 teams in the first competitive competition on the Downs.
With 7 teams, rather than playing a bye, one team each week will double up, ensuring everyone gets to join in the fun each week.
After 7 weeks and 8 games it is now time for the finals and 4 teams remain in the hunt for glory.
The Whippersnappers (8 wins, 0 losses) are a young, skillful team made up from Under 18 Crows players and almost every recent Under 18 female state representative the Downs has had. In a competition where skilled girls can make a world of difference the team largely relies on quick ball movement from the back half kicking to a couple of dead-eye male forwards to kick the 6 pointers.
Loose Ball Gets (7 wins, 1 loss) are primarily made up of University Cougars senior players and a couple of girlfriends who play social touch football together. They get a lot of loose ball through the middle and really look to involve the females up forward, taking advantage of the 9 point goals to maximum effect.
The Scorchers (4 wins, 4 losses) really don't take too much of the game too seriously, yet still manage to get some goals on the board. They have a very stingy defence which makes it tough to find free forwards but struggle to move the ball cleanly from one end of the field to the other without a turnover.
Veteran Free Agents (3 wins, 5 losses, 106.1%) snuck into the top 4 on percentage. The team is largely sourced from the Toowoomba Turf Club and has some very quick and agile midfielders who love to take the game on. With slightly less football experience than the other teams, if they find themselves tactically outmatched they struggle to make changes to swing the tide back in their favour.
All teams will once again play this week either in the Semi Finals or Consolation Finals matches with a Preliminary Final being played in the later timeslot. The Grand Final will be played next Wednesday (December 12th), assuming we once again don't get torrential rain and will no doubt be a fantastic conclusion to a great first season of AFL 9s Toowoomba.
