The Newtown Breakaways’ 2012 season culminated on Saturday 24th November with a Presentation Night at the ZanziBar in Newtown.
On a light and informal night that primarily celebrated and rewarded on-field individual performances and successes, it also took time to acknowledge the strong off-field position that the Club finds itself in coming out of the 2012 season and looking towards the 2013 season ahead - a direct result of the hard work of the Committee and countless contributions from the playing group throughout the year.
Whilst a young and transient playing list at times hampered the team’s performance and true potential, the Club was once again happy to participate in a final series and regards the season as a success under sometimes trying circumstances.
With some long-term player retirements going into 2012 the opportunity presented for both new and existing players to step up and fill some of the significant voids and this was reflected in the truly diverse group of award recipients on the night, highlighted by Georgia Verkuylen receiving the Clubs Best and Fairest.
Georgia had an extremely consistent year playing as a key mid-fielder, was dangerous around goal when pushing forward and added a new dimension to her game with her levels of defensive pressure, most notably her tackles laid statistics.
A worthy Runner-up to Georgia was Verna Leigh, who also enjoyed a positive year and who demonstrated her adaptability in playing, forward, back and in the centre. Other worthy and notable award recipients on the night were Tobi Noble, Anna Ruut, Rosalie Graham, Paula Bartlett and Salome Cerda-Vargas.
With pre-season training less than a week away, the Breakaways recruitment arms are now outstretched and searching for new players to join the Club and Women’s AFL. Prospective players need no experience, with full training being provided, and enquiries about the 2013 season can be made through email (president@newtownbreakaways.com) or through the club's Facebook page: www.facebook.com#!/newtownbreakaways
The Club is now looking forward to continuing its history of on-field success and being part of the continued growth and recognition of the sport in NSW throughout 2013 and beyond.
