PENRITH Rams chairman Kevin Tate is confident the division one team will challenge for the title next year after announcing Craig Sharp as the club's new head coach.
Sharp has been involved with the Rams for several years and took over from Phil McGuinness as a caretaker for the end of the 2012 campaign.
Tate said former first grade coach Geoff Payne will join Sharp as assistant.
"We tried going externally last year and it didn't work for us, so this year we have gone internal," Tate said. "Craig won a flag with our under-18s team three years ago and knows all the players who have come through the club very well.
"Together with Geoff Payne, who won the 2011 division two competition, they have two flags between them. They have worked together for many years and we are confident they will be successful."
The Rams will welcome back several players next season.
"Our most notable player returning is Tim Cummins (pictured), who was overseas playing cricket last season," Tate said.
"We also had about five players overseas studying in Canada.
"If we keep all our players on the park I am sure we will contest for the flag come September."
