The Brisbane Lions will head to Toowoomba for two days in February as part of the Australia Post AFL Community Camps.
The camps will see more than 800 AFL players take the game to regional and rural communities across Australia.
The Lions, who visited Toowoomba two years ago in the immediate aftermath of the 2011 Queensland floods, will carry out training sessions and visit schools, local football clubs, nursing homes and hospitals.
While the itinerary is still being finalised, there will be plenty of community events and activities involving the entire team.
The aim of the Community Camps is to bring together individuals and communities, irrespective of backgrounds and beliefs, while promoting healthy lifestyles.
General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said that the camps were a great lead-in to the AFL season.
“It’s so important to bring the game into regional areas of Australia and we are particularly excited to be heading back to Toowoomba - it’s a great opportunity to visit our very proud and passionate supporters and members in the Darling Downs,” Warren said.
“The camp gives a huge boost to regional communities and we saw this first-hand when we visited Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley in 2011.”
“Despite having recently suffered some extreme hardship, the people of Toowoomba were just outstanding and all our players were very humbled by the community spirit there.”
The Lions will be in Toowoomba, 127km from Brisbane, from 15-16 February. Stay tuned to lions.com.au for more details!
