JUNIOR LAKERS’ SUCCESSES CONTINUE IN MILLICENT

The 2012/13 Junior Tournament season for the Lakers continued to enjoy successes and show promising signs for the future at the Millicent Junior Tournament last weekend.

Junior Development Officer Trevor Semmens, is particularly encouraged by the obvious progress being made by individual players and in team structures as well as the titles secured.

The Lakers Under 18 sides have stamped themselves as a class above their opposition after just two Junior Tournaments. In Millicent over the weekend they both scored effortless wins against representative teams from the wider region and South Western Victoria.

The Under 12 Boys being coached by Malinda Markiewicz, finished in the playoffs for Division 2.They scored one win against Portland, 21-12, in the minor round and then met Millicent B in the Div.2 qualifying final.

The Under 14 Boys Div. 1 drew with Naracoorte, defeated Hamilton 39-35, but lost to Warrnambool 27-30. Their improvement was obvious in their 49-34 win over Millicent in the quarter final.

The Under 14 Boys Division 2 side, seriously weakened by illness and injury before the weekend, was still competitive and managed a 10 point win over Naracoorte.

The Lakers Under 16 Boys started impressively, defeating Great Southern, 49-31 and Naracoorte 46-27 but stumbled 35-36 against Hamilton.

Steady improvement marked the Lakers Under 16 Boys Div. 2 side performances over the weekend. They defeated Naracoorte, 53-35, and Warrnambool White 36-23 but went down to Forestville and Warrnambool Green.

Marianne Walters guided the Lakers Under 12 Div. 1 Girls into the grand final against the taller and stronger Great Southern. They won three of their minor round games and then defeated Hamilton in the semi-final.

The Lakers Under 12 Girls Div. 2 side gained a lot from the experience of their first tournament. Their three opponents were the first teams in this age groups.

The Lakers Under 14 Girls, under the guidance of Dan Stratford, earned a shot at the title after a draw with Great Southern, and wins over Millicent and Portland followed up by a big result over Millicent in the semi-final.

The Under 14 Girls Div. 2 team came home with two wins, a 2 point win over Millicent and a 32-13 score against Naracoorte.

Bryan Green led the Under 16 Girls into the finals series on the back of three easy wins, 39-13 against Warrnambool, 45-23 against Portland and 53-27in their meet with Bordertown. They met and defeated Hamilton in the quarter final.
