Southern Power celebrated a premiership season with 140 guests at Tradies, Gymea on Saturday 13 October where achievements on and off the field were recognised and awarded.
Top honours went to Andrew Craig (pictured on right with AFL NSW/ACT General Manager Tom Harley at the Phelan Medal) winning the Division 1 Best & Fairest award and Kathryn Hull winning the Women’s Best & Fairest award, capping off an outstanding year for both players.
2012 saw Craig awarded the Division 1 Snow Medallist and play in the NSW Indigenous representative side. Hull, the women’s captain, played in the NSW Women’s representative squad, was named Women’s AFL Sydney Team of the Year and came equal third in the competition’s Best & Fairest.
The Lorraine and Brian Cloney, Club Woman and Club Man of the year awards were presented to Kathryn Hull and Rhys Vance in recognition of their contributions on and off field in 2012.
The Under 18 Division Two side celebrated their first premiership in the age group. Reagan Sharpe took out the Best & Fairest award, with Liam Hamling named as runner up as well as best first year player for the U18s. The other Liam (Pollard) took out the Coaches award, Taylor Barry was named as the Most Improved and Daniel Lorenzetto was announced as the Players Player.
In Division 1 Liam Davis was runner up in the Best & Fairest award, in what was a close count all night and he was also announced as joint winner of Coaches award with Matt Young. Co-Captain Phil Hamer won the Players Player award and Daniel Wood was recognised for a great season as the Most Improved player in Division1.
Troy Sheen had a great year for the Power and was awarded the Division 3 Best & Fairest, followed closely in second place by Captain Ian Holder. The ever present and popular team man Andrew Wardrop was named as the Players Player, whilst Chris Guild and Tim Jensen took out the Most Improved and Coaches awards respectively.
Captain Rod Bloomfield took out the top honour in Division 4, whilst Robbie O’Donnell was runner up and was also named as Players Player. Clubman of the year Rhys Vance received the Coaches award, Nathan Lenehan was named as the Most Improved and Adrian Dark was awarded the Best First Year player.
Jenna Miller capped off an outstanding year, which saw her play alongside Kathryn Hull in the NSW Women’s representative squad, by being named as runner up in the Women’s Best & Fairest. Young Alex Tegg was named as the Women’s Most Improved player in a season which saw her finish in the top 5 of the best & fairest count and play in the U18 National Championships with NSW. Team favourite Kat Parker, took out the Players Player award and Patricia Tidswell was named as the Best First Year player.
Outgoing Division 1 Coach, Simon Closter was awarded life membership of Southern Power after many years as a player and coach. Closter took the club to a Division 2 premiership in 2010 and in 2011 & 2012, with Co-Coach Rod Craig, took the club to the Division 1 Grand Final, falling just short of the desired premiership against Manly.
The night finished off with U18s Captain Dane Walters being named as the clubs Most Courageous player and key forward’s Tim Cashman (U18s) and Jared Wilson (Div 1) sharing the goal kicking award with 44 goals each.
