Academy squad named

Following on from a successful joint under 18 summer program in 2011-2012, the Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy in conjunction with AFL Queensland recently ran a successful testing day for invited 17 - 19 yr olds with over 55 players participating to finalise a ‘summer development squad’.
This group of players will now train over summer from November through to March in preparation for possible QLD State Under 18 selection, as well as Brisbane Lions Academy selection which will be finalised in March 2013 for this age group.
A number of Academy boys from 2012 (32 players) along with boys from local club football (4 players) and the Academy “Rookie Search” talent identification program (6 athletes) make up the initial squad of 42 players.
When considering players for the initial invitation and subsequent training squad selection a number of factors are taken into consideration including (but not limited to): playing performances this year, skill level, game sense / knowledge, fitness levels, attitude & work ethic, ability to follow instructions, and importantly the suitability to play football at state and the elite national AFL level.
Those players that haven’t been chosen in the initial training squad are strongly encouraged to continue training hard over summer back at your respective senior clubs and the Academy and QLD state under 18 staff will liaise with club coaches / football managers to monitor your progress.
It should be noted that Players outside of the training squad have the ability to be invited in to join the summer development squad at a later date if they consistently demonstrate the required characteristics and abilities at club level over summer.
The players that have been selected in the initial training squad below will be required to commit to training a minimum 3 sessions a week (2 in Brisbane) as a group commencing in the first week of November as well as doing extra training work in their own time. Failure to meet these requirements may result in players being removed from the training group at any stage.
The players named below along with at least parent / guardian are required to attend a compulsory “Introductory Session” onMonday 5th November at Giffin Park in Coorparoo starting at 5:30pm. During this session the training program, staff and coaches will outline the summer program in more detail along with player expectations.
