Dale Chivas wrote his name into the Penrith Rams history book on Saturday Night after being named Michael Walker Medallist for the fourth time in front of a capacity crowd at Penrith Paceway.
The 24 year-old’s fourth Best & Fairest sees him surpass Jason Ware, who won the coveted medal three times in his distinguished twenty-five year career.
Chivas commenced his career at the Rams in 1994. In 2009, he joined Campbelltown to play Premier Division. He returned to the club in 2011 with immediate success, hoisting a Division Two premiership cup, the club’s first flag in twenty years. He also won the Walker Medal last year, to add to his wins in 2007 and 2008.
Close friend, Jay Edwards who also returned to the club last year after a two year stint with the Blues, was runner up and also took out the prestigious Player Players Award.
Max McNamara took out the Reserve Grade Geoff Eldering Medal to add to his premiership medallion this year. It was an amazing achievement for the 2010 First Grade Player’s Player who battled injury early in the season and played only twelve games in the Home and Away series. The evergreen Mark Jackson was runner-up.
In a tightly fought Third Grade tussle, Justin Weller hung on by just a single vote to beat first year player, Michael Brown, who flew home to amass seven points out of a possible nine in the final three rounds.
The Under 18’s Alan Stewart medal was another tightly contested event, with Harry Doyle prevailing over Patrick Pope after a head and head battle in the second half of the year.
There were no scares in the Ramettes Women’s Award with Natalie Camilleri never headed with a runaway victory. The first year player, who was also named as half back flank in the Sydney AFL Women’s Team of the Year, took out the inaugural title from the fast finishing 20 year old Stephanie Kostic, who last month was named as Sydney’s Rising Star.
First year player, strength and conditioning coach and first grade runner, Theo Paneras was a very popular recipient of Club Person of the Year.
Current board member, Michael Haynes, was awarded life membership for services to the club. Haynes has had a distinguished career both as a player and administrator over almost twenty years, including a three year stint as Chairman.
