NZ AA Secondary Schools Championships – Nelson- Day One

Burnside High school Boys made a positive start on the opening day of the NZ AA Secondary Schools Championships which started in Nelson on Monday with a confidence boosting start, downing Hastings Boys High 78-63 and later in the day edging clear of Fraser High school 79-71. Burnside will take on top seed Westlake Boys HS at 12noon and Massey High at 7pm. Coach Jo Hammond will endeavor to rest starters today to ensure Burnside wins the last two pool games so as to make the Top eight.

Westlake recorded two mammoth victories to show that they are the side to beat this year with a 113-57 win over Onehunga High and followed that up with a 105-62 thumping of Massey High school. Defending champion Rosmini College in Pool two also started strongly with wins over Otumoetai College 71-53 and Palmerston North Boys HS  77-55 despite having several of its top players in Spain at the 3x3 Youth World series.

New Zealand lost its title, eliminated by the new champion Serbia in the Quarter-Finals.

The Cashmere High Boys will be looking to bounce back when it meets Lynfield College first up on day 2 at 8.30am followed by Nelson College at 3.30pm after it narrowly lost its opening encounter against 6th seed Tauranga Boys College 73-69 despite a strong fight-back.

Aranui High continues a tough road with Melville High at 10.15am and Auckland Grammar at 5.15pm on Tuesday after being dumped by 4th seed Hutt Valley 98-65.

Top Southern Zone qualifier Christchurch Girls High started strongly with a 71-46 win over St Mary’s College from Wellington and takes on Wellington Girls College at 8.30am and Tauranga Girls College at 5.15pm on Tuesday.

Rangiora High, seeded 6th had a comfortable 68-41 first up win over Waikato Diocesan School and followed that up in the late game with a win over St Peters School from Cambridge 59-45.

Cashmere High Girls had a win and a loss on Day one and meets Kristin School and Kavanagh College late on Tuesday evening
