Saints player-coach Brenton Powell beat home teammate Nick Gill to take top honours at last night's AFL Cairns dinner at Cazalys.
The midfielder polled 21 votes to Gill’s 19 to win the Crathern Medal, awarded to the competition’s premier player.
A model of consistency all season, Powell led at every turn and won despite not polling any votes in the final three rounds.
Centrals Trinity star Ryan Matthews finished third on 17 votes, while competition standout goalkicker Matt Walsh was well back in eighth.
North Cairns’ Dean Uebergang – who played his 200th game this season – won the reserve grade player award and clubmate Kane Richter was awarded coach of the year.
Declan Oliver, from Centrals, won the under-18 player of the year, while former AFL Cairns president Russel Beer was given life membership.
Other award winners included Ben Koch (umpire of the year), Myra Tomsana (goal of the year) and Tom Clough (mark of the year) for his grab against Saints.
