North Shore Bombers duo, Jon Hayres (pictured left) and Ron Wason (middle, pictured bottom left) were recognised for excellent seasons by being named Coach and Captain of the 2012 AFL Sydney Team of the Year.
Hayres was acknowledged for his work in his inaugural season as coach of the Bombers Premier Division side. Despite bowing out in the first Semi-Final on the weekend, Hayres oversaw the progression of the side from fourth place in 2011 to second in 2012.
The story could well have been different had North Shore defeated Pennant Hills in the final round- a result that would have seen the Bombers finish minor premiers.
29 year-old Wason enjoyed another strong season across half-back which included being named captain of the AFL Sydney Representative side that played the Victorian Amateurs at Blacktown.
The top-five sides dominated this year’s Team, with Balmain and UNSW/ES each having seven representatives.
Dean Garroway was awarded the Umpire of the Year.
The Team of the Year was selected by the AFL Sydney Premier Division coaches, and Football Operations Manager, Garry Burkinshaw based on the following criteria:
- Players must have played a minimum of seven (7) games as at Round 15;
- The coaches could not pick players from their own clubs
The Team of the Year is attached below.
