Joey’s went through the entire season with an undefeated record but were pushed all the way in the Grand Final by a dogged Pittsworth who refused to give in.
The game started with St Josephs winning much of the early possession but failed to kick straight and at quarter time held only a 3 point advantage 1.4.10 to 1.1.7.
A two goal to nil second quarter helped Joey’s open up a handy 16 point lead at the main break after a sickening head clash left St Josephs midfielder Sam Flannery with a nasty gash which would later require 7 stitches. Flannery’s lost would be Pittsworth’s gain in the third term as they stormed back into contention and at one stage of the third quarter took a 1 point lead.
But St Josephs composed themselves in the last term and ran out eventual 13 point winners 6.11.47 to 5.4.34. Pittsworth defender Brendan McDonald narrowly edged out St Josephs midfielder Jarron Miller for the best on ground honours with Miller taking out the league MVP award and Pittsworth forward Tom O’Sullivan winning the leading goal kicker award.
The win was the second in 3 years for the St Josephs group who took out the U15 flag back in 2009. Joey’s coach Rodney Spaine praised the effort of his squad who had stuck together as a united unit through the last 3 years.
