The Toowoomba East Stingers President, Neville Jericho has been awarded the AFL Darling Downs Juniors Club Volunteer of the Year award for 2012 at Saturday night’s awards dinner.
Jericho has been involved at the Stingers as a helper and parent since 2010 but stepped up to the Presidential role when the club was at risk of collapse just a month out from the start of the season.
Jericho decided to ensure his children and the rest of the club’s children had a place to play football and instantly focussed on consolidating the players who still were at the club.
He sought the help of Stingers Life Members who shared a similar goal and with a new committee in place started planning for the club to once again return to be a force in 2013.
Neville has also been proactive in seeking the help of local AFLQ staff members and has helped pilot the AFL Darling Downs Clubs Alive Program, a new initiative aimed at analysing every aspect of the football club. He retrospectively ensured the Stingers held Kids First, Umpire Appreciation & Positive or It’s Pointless rounds and has rallied the parents at the club to run & cater for the Downs two biggest days, Preliminary & Grand Final day.
“I'm excited to see the club grow again in 2013 with the re-introduction of our Under 14’s and 16’s” said Jericho upon receiving his award.
Also on Saturday night, 8 volunteer award winners were recognised for their service to the game in 2012. 82 people were nominated for the awards, when combined with the 32 nominations received for senior awards; the dearth of volunteers at Darling Downs clubs is fantastic to see and the true lifeblood of our game.
