McPhee on target for Bombers
SOUTH Toowoomba can thank the property market around Harristown Park for unearthing one of the finds of the AFL Darling Downs season.
Star forward Dan McPhee has kicked a massive 107 goals in his first year with the Bombers and only linked with the club because he lives across the road.
A former top-grade footballer in Brisbane, McPhee had spent some time out of the game before moving to Toowoomba last year.
But after watching Souths train during the pre-season, he decided it was time to lace up his boots again.
"He'd watched us doing pre-season training and it finally got the better of him," Souths coach Shaun Reardon said.
"Dan has been a great asset for us on and off the field.
"Being the super coach that I am, I left him out of the first round. I keep getting reminded about that one."
McPhee's composure in front of goal has been crucial to the Bombers' success in 2012.
He is the league's leading goal-kicker and equalled Souths' club record with 18 majors in a match against Dalby in June.
Not a bad effort for a bloke who has spent the season playing out of position.
"He conned us all," Reardon said.
"He told us when he turned up to training that he was a forward.
"But he came clean and said that he always been a back. He's never actually played in the forwards.
"It was a real stroke of luck for us. We're really happy he walked across the road."
