Rams claim Battle honours

Churchill United has claimed its fifth Battle of Britain Cup with an annihilation of Falcons 2000 in the final on Sunday afternoon running out 7-0 victors.

The Rams dominated from beginning to end with fluent attacking play.

Just ten minutes after the kick off Churchill claimed the lead when Aiden Huizer floated a long free kick to his captain Jamie Robson who headed past an advancing Paul Storey in the Falcons goal.

Falcon’s only real goal attempt of the match was well saved by Churchill keeper Jason Sands shortly after as he tipped Scott Mackeown’s venomous shot around the upright.

Churchill coach Luke Cheney then broke the Falcons line to send a cross to strike partner Jesse Kennedy who coolly controlled and finished for the Rams to lead 2-0.

It was 3-0 before the break when Taylor Jackson went a charmed run before pulling the trigger to leave Storey with no chance.

In the second half it was much of the same and Cheney soon made it 4-0 with a neat finish before claiming his second hat trick in as many weeks to blow the score out to 6-0.

Player of the match Cheney almost added another when his shot struck the post before the ball bounced up for substitute Dean Pyle to finish and complete the 7-0 rout.

In the Inaugural Steel Youth Cup final Churchill’s Youth side was too good for Falcons again winning 3-1.

Churchill’s goals were scored by Shane McColl (penalty), Ben Skinner and an own goal from Falcons.  Skinner was also recognised with player of the match honours.

Churchill completed a cup trifecta on the day when its women’s team won the Browne-Huizer Trophy in extra time 1-0 over a hard working Tyers team.

Churchill claimed the winner just prior to the extra time interval when Lani Murdoch’s corner swung into the net.  Player of the match honours went to Churchill’s Elise Winkel.

In the Reserve grade Shopwell Trophy Fortuna triumphed 3-2 with George Fkaris scoring a brace for the Orangemen. Whilst Bekithemba Madiye scored both of Traralgon’s goals.

Trafalgar Victory backed up its Championship victory with a win in the final of the second division Nan Bosma Cup 2-0 over Traralgon City.  Trafalgar’s goals were scored by Lachlan Wyatt and Brian Farmer.
