Falcons and Rams ready for Battle

Falcons 2000 will play off in its fourth consecutive Battle of Britain Cup final when it faces Churchill United at Latrobe City Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Falcons have previously won the prestigious cup; the oldest continually played for trophy in Victorian soccer, with wins in 1971, 1993, 2009 and 2010 but were narrowly defeated last year by Fortuna 4-3 in the final.

The 1993 victory was the only time Falcons and Churchill have met in the final when the Birds defied the odds to take the silverware 2-0.

Falcons have made their way to the final this year with hard fought victories on the road over Monash 3-2 in the quarter final and Fortuna 3-2 in the semi final and they will savor the opportunity of playing the final on its home pitch.

The Birds have had an up and down season in the league and after finishing seventh on the ladder go into the final as underdogs against league champions Churchill United.

Falcons coach Mauro de Luca remains positive about his side’s prospects in the final.

“We played them (Churchill) a few weeks back and I think we matched them for most of the game before they got two goals in two minutes to win right at the end”.

“If we play to a man we have players like Jerry Daniels and Kevin Carcellar who are capable of brilliance and I think we can cause an upset”.

Churchill also has a rich history in the 61 year old competition having won its first in 1998 before equaling Yallourn’s consecutive winning record with three on the trot in 2005, 2006 and 2007.  The Rams also played off in the final in 1978 against Moe as well as 1993 versus Falcons.

Churchill made its way to this year’s final with a 4-0 quarter final win over Sale and a narrow 2-1 win over Olympians in the semi.

Churchill coach Luke Cheney is eyeing the prospect of a unique treble with the league in Churchill’s keeping already, the Battle of Britain Cup and finals series Premiership are also still in the offing.

“We set out to win all three competitions this year and it’s up to the boys to stay focused and bring home the silverware”.

“The team is under no illusions and we don’t think Falcons are easy beats by any stretch, they proved that against us already this year and with them getting home ground advantage we’ll be taking nothing for granted”.
