The reigning premiers Toowoomba Tigers have advanced to next weekend’s preliminary final after holding off the University Cougars by 16points in the Allied Pickfords Cup elimination final.
Tigers tried to make the most of the strong breeze at Rockville Oval, as they opened the first quarter of the knock out final against the Cougars kicking 3 goals to 1. Tigers were erratic and could of lengthened their lead over the Cougars, luckily wayward kicking didn’t cost them in the end.
The reigning premiers took a slender 14point lead into the first break as Dolley and Priest were the standouts for the Tigers. Chris Davis and Luke Brumley were the main contributors for the Cougars in a high intensity opening quarter.
This time it was University’s opportunity to make the most of the strong breeze and they did so booting 4 majors to 2, to cut the lead back to a mere 3 points. Live wire Cougars forward Jarryd McCarthy booted three goals to lift the spirits of the Uni faithful.
2011 Grand-Final best on ground Luke Adams lifted for the Tigers as did Wickes and Gatfield.
After the main break Tigers came out and lifted their intensity and booted the first 4 goals of the “premiership” quarter. University replied late in the term booting 2 majors of their own. Toowoomba was able to stretch their half time lead from 3 points back to 16points and they needed every point of that lead with University having the wind advantage for the final quarter.
Hugh Priest, Brad Dolley and big man Trent Ballin were solid contributors for the Tigers as was Chris Davis, Luke Brumley and the late arriving Garry Wade.
It may have been their finals experience that got them over the line but the experience heads of Adams, O’Donoghue, Wickes and McErvale all stepped up. Tigers and Cougars both kicked 2.3 in the final quarter, as the reigning premiers held onto win by 16points and book their spot in the Preliminary Final.
