Southern Power are aiming to go one step further after their Grand Final loss to the Manly-Warringah Wolves in Division One last season.
Although the ten-point loss was ‘disappointing’, there were plenty of positives to come out of 2011, according to club President, Simon Davies.
“It was obviously disappointing to lose to Manly particularly because the guys believed they were capable of beating what was a very good side,” Davies said.
“I think looking back at the season as a whole we were definitely very pleased with the team in their first year in Division One.
“We certainly met our expectations and exceeded them a little.”
Davies admitted this year has had its challenges but the club is well placed to make another finals assault.
“I think it’s fair to say we’ve had our challenges but its pleasing coming the business end of the season where we are in the mix in first and reserve grade,” he said.
“We haven’t been blessed with the numbers we have had in previous years, in particular the lower grades.
“With that said, it is particularly pleasing to see the Under 18s doing well this year and that comes down to the hard work they have put into their pre-season.”
The Power again sits second behind the Wolves this year but there are a couple of reasons why Davies believes they are better placed to challenge for the title.
“I think the side is a little bit better this year given the experience that they had in the previous year in Division One and with the strength of those extra couple of quality players,” he said.
“The guys again believe they are capable of it and they are big on the accountability to one another.”
“The coaching staff have been very good at making the guys accountable as well- that’s the challenge for our side heading into the finals.
“We have to be accountable not only on the field but also when it comes to things like training and off-field activities.”
Davies wants the club to maintain the forward momentum and like most clubs, looks to youth for future growth.
“A big driver for our club this year is particularly around the Under 18s and making a connection with the junior clubs,” he enthused.
“I still think we have an opportunity to do much better work in that space, building a pathway for our juniors into our seniors.
“We certainly see that as a cornerstone of the strength of the club long-term.”
