TRENT SLATTER | THE CHRONICLE | 17 AUGUST 2012
WARWICK Redbacks captain Brendan Iles is playing down his chances of winning an unprecedented fourth-straight Holman medal tomorrow night.
The star midfielder has dominated the AFL Darling Downs best and fairest award for the past three seasons.
His form this year has again been exceptional with Iles earning his first Queensland Country guernsey last month.
But despite his representative success, Iles' club side has struggled to make an impact.
The Redbacks failed to build on last year's grand final appearance and finished outside of finals contention in fifth place.
Iles believed Warwick's disappointing season may have prevented him from picking up enough 3-2-1 votes.
"I don't really rate my chances at all," he said.
"From a personal point of view, I was happy with my efforts this year. I felt like I played some pretty handy footy.
"But the team itself didn't achieve what we set out to which was a bit disappointing.
"It makes it hard for players to do well individually."
Iles tipped the medal winner would likely come from either South Toowoomba or Coolaroo.
Roos midfielder Tom Rudolph has been in superb form, even pushing forward for a few goals.
And Souths duo Bradon Behan and Trent Saxelby have been pivotal to the Bombers' charge towards the minor premiership.
"There's plenty of good players that should standout. I'd probably be tipping Tom Rudolph to do well," Iles said.
"You've got to think there's a couple of good players from South Toowoomba too. They're looking really strong.
"Usually it's the teams with a few wins that the Holman winner comes from (but) it's one of those things. You just can't tell."
