There is not a lot to link Mooreland, Oklahoma to Caboolture, Queensland but 15 year old Connor Fraser is one of those links. Connor moved to the area from Mooreland in December to live with his mother Jennifer.
After making the usual adjustments to a new town, new school and even seeing cars on the other side of the road Connor started to get involved with new sports at high school. He tried them all but one took his imagination, that most Australian of sports, AFL football.
“It’s not like American football or rugby where there are formed lines every play”, said Connor, “I like the way you can start anywhere and move where you like”. He readily admits the skills are not easy to pick up with handball being the toughest to crack.
The Caboolture Juniors have welcomed Connor with open arms and he has started training with the U/14 team twice a week and some of the boys have already made plans for him in the off season, with their basketball and Gridiron teams.
Caboolture President Debbie Graham has been amazed at how well Connor has fitted in with the team, “He is a really nice kid, listens well and tries hard to get the skills right”. “Bring Connor into the game is just another part of meeting the needs of a growing sport, he is like any other new player, just he has come a bit further than most”, she said.
The next step for Connor is hopefully being able to go with Mum to the Lions game this weekend; you certainly can’t do that in Mooreland.
