United success

Churchill United coach Luke Cheney has warned the best is yet to come after the Rams secured the Gippsland Soccer League seniors championship on Sunday when it defeated Traralgon City 1-0.

Before the game the Rams were eight points ahead of second-placed Fortuna and needed just one point from the remaining three games to win the league.

"All I told the boys before the game was that we are still playing for the three points and it was the same as any other week," Cheney said.

"If we get the three points then the rest takes care of itself."

On Sunday Traralgon City put up a good fight to hold the Rams at bay for the majority of the 90 minutes.

However, Churchill's Taylor Jackson broke through in the 85th minute with a goal to ease the pressure, and eventually hand the Rams the coveted league championship.

"Traralgon City were really good; I'm more than sure we will be seeing them in the finals, they've improved a lot," the playing coach said.

"But it was a big relief; we know we still have a lot of work to do to get the two league wins, win the Battle of Britain Cup (against Falcons) and concentrate on finals.

"We won't be resting on one; we are going for all three."

Churchill has only lost one game so far this season - losing to rivals Fortuna 2-1 in round nine - but since then has not looked back.

The Rams are 10 points clear of Fortuna, who drew 2-2 with third-placed Moe United on Sunday, but must face the Red Devils and the Orangemen in the remaining two rounds before finals.

"It's been a tough season, there have been no easy games and there's three, maybe four teams vying for third and fourth spot," Cheney said.

"Those spots are still up in the air, that's how competitive it has been this year."

The Churchill coach said he credited the championship victory to his team's ability to "work together to get the right result".

He said Churchill had played as a team all season as there was "no room for individuals".
