Boort v Wycheproof-Narraport
Boort shocked Wycheproof-Narraport in the opening quarter when they shot out to a 32-point lead by siren time. Kicking with the aid of a good wind the Magpies took full advantage in what would have been Boort’s best quarter of football for the year, and the Demons did not have the answers. Gooding, Easton and Garvy-Hawke were all firing as the Magpies piled on seven first quarter goals and held the Demons to two majors for the term.
In the second it was the turn of the visitors to capitalise on the wind and they done it in fine style as they pulled back Boort’s first quarter lead to just 7-points by the main break. Jones was starting to get plenty of the ball and becoming a headache for the Magpies, Coatsworth was leading from the front and things started to go right for the Demons. Goals to Jones, Dillon and Turner saw the visitors quickly reduce the margin and put them back on course with a half to go.
Boort were not able to repeat their first quarter result in this term but the Demons were able to continue on from where they left off at the main break. The demons went on to add a further six goals while their backline stood firm to hold the Magpies to just two goals. Jones was brilliant in this quarter, kicking four goals of his ten goals for the day in this quarter, to give his side a 16-point lead at the last change.
Boort who had given the Demons a mighty fright in the early part of the game, were able to play the game right out in one of their better performances for the year. Losing by 32-points didn’t give a true indication of how they played, Lanyon showed his class in the middle to be Boort’s best, he was well supported by Garvey-Hawke and Easton but class of the Demons shone through as they ran the game out, finishing with a further six-goals to give them a comfortable 32-point win and that win has now secured them second spot with two rounds remaining.

Charlton v Donald
Donald, who kicked with the wind in the first term, put the acid on the Navy Blues right from the first bounce as they moved the ball quickly forward and was rewarded with early goals to Burke and Harberger. Charlton were struggling and the pace of Donald was causing some concern. Charlton’s main ball getters were being well held and this was stopping them moving the ball into their attacking area, and when they were finally able to do so a simple turnover seen the Royals move the ball to the other end for another major. From the centre bounce the Navy Blues were able to push the ball forward which resulted in their first goal, kicked by Carl Thiesz. As the quarter neared siren time the Navy Blues broke free to add two goals and somehow took a two point lead to the first change.
Charlton who were not playing good footy, struggled again in this term and Donald who had eased off towards the end of the first quarter had regrouped and kicked four goals into the wind and took a 10-point lead to the main break. Bell, Burke and Maatman were putting in solid performances for the Royals and for the Navy Blues, Judd, McKee and Finlay were their better players.
The third term was where Charlton had to get their game together if they were going to get the points over Donald, but they were unable to achieve that result and by the end of the quarter they had slipped a bit further behind the Royals who would take a 23-point lead into the last quarter. Charlton could only manage one goal for the quarter and the Royals gave them a chance by only kicking three goals.
With a fair bit riding on the result of this game, Charlton needed to lift if they were going to record an important win for the club, this would be a hard task as they trailed by just under four goals and had only been able to kick six in the first three terms. The Navy Blues won the term by the narrowest margin which was well off what they had hoped would happen. Donald had done all the hard work and deserved their win, for Charlton it’s off to Wedderburn next week for a must win game, otherwise footy for the Navy Blues will be hanging in the balance.

St Arnaud v Birchip-Watchem
This game had a lot riding on it for both clubs, a win for St Arnaud keeps them in the fight for a finals spot and a loss makes the job a lot harder, but is possible. The Bulls a win would give them breathing space with their bye happening next round, and still a slim possibility to grab second spot in the final round.
The Bulls kicked into the wind in the opening term and were able to outscore the Saints and hold a four point lead at quarter time. Holmes was dominating the centre bounces and Hallam was taking full advantage of the coach’s good work. Motlop was giving his all for the Saints as was Lee Stewart in a game that was a struggle for both sides to get any major gap on their opponent.
Birchip-Watchem with Foott in good form were first to score in this term when the forward kicked truly with two goals, at the other end McNamee was the main focus for the Saints finishing the day with eight goals. The Bulls did eventually get a break over the home side but that would be short lived as the Saints rallied to bring the half time lead of the Bulls back to 9-points.
McNamee gave the Saints every hope of winning this game when he kicked three of their four goals for the quarter and be within touch of the Bulls and an important victory. The Saints got out to lead by a goal late in the third and all was looking good, but the Bulls replied with two goals just prior to quarters end and regain the lead, that being 7-points.
Still hopeful of pulling off a win the Saints supporters were full of support as we entered the last term but the Bulls had other ideas and the pilled on seven goals to three in the quarter. Midway through the quarter the game was still in the balance and the Saints were not winning the ball out of the middle, but they let the opportunity slip to address the Bulls strength around the middle. This was a game the Saints had to win, they had nothing to lose by moving people up the ground to counter the Bulls, but it didn’t happen and the Bulls were allowed to run out winners by 32-points.
Best for the Bulls: C. Hallam, Z. Holmes, T. Carland, A. Hutchins, T. Walder and Cam Hall.
Goals: L. Foott 5, J. Tyler, T. Walder 3, M. Smith 2, D. Ferrier, Z. Holmes, R. Vesikuru and C. Hall 1 each.
Best for the Saints: S. Motlop, J. McNamee, S. Miles, T. Petrie, L. Stewart .
Goals: J. McNamee 8, B. Organ, R. Wild, N. Coghlan and S. Motlop 1 each.
