The NSW Australian Football History Society will hold their annual lecture next month and this time they have chosen the subject, The Teal Cup and NSW’s involvement.
The Teal Cup was a national Under 17 Australian Football competition from which many young men went on to have successful VFL/AFL careers.
Each year the Society sponsors a talk on a significant aspect on the history of football in NSW and Society Vice President, Bill Carey, will present the 2012 oration, as part of the Ralph Robertson Annual Lecture, on the Teal Cup.
The event will be held at Western Suburbs Australian Football Club’s licensed premises in Hampton Street, Croydon Park, on Saturday 8 September, commencing at 12 midday.
Carey has done a magnificent job researching the history of the competition which first started in 1953, specifically as a contest between NSW and Queensland, which, following a few name changes has developed into the National Under 18 Championships.
He has most of the NSW team sheets which include players, coaches, trainers, scores and umpires from 1963. The two known games in the fifties are proving a little elusive but he says he is working on them.
The Society is keen to get hold of more memorabilia for the function, including photos, jumpers, blazers, football records etc. which it could display at the event.
As well, any anecdotes on the respective teams’ activities or the selection trials, many of which were held in NSW country areas, would be beneficial for Carey to include in his address.
The Society has issued a general invitation to those who participated in the team in one way or another, to attend the function which will include a visual display. He also has plans to produce a small publication on the subject which will be available to attendees.
