THE CHRONICLE | 30 JULY 2012
COOLAROO'S charge towards the AFL Darling Downs minor premiership continues to pick up steam after it defeated reigning premiers Toowoomba Tigers at Gold Park on Saturday.
The Roos notched their 12th straight victory with the 15.9 (99) to 11.14 (80) triumph and put a dent in the Tigers' claims for a third straight flag.
The Tigers have won just two of their past five matches and struggled to build any momentum against the in-form Roos.
Phil Dreise was invaluable for Coolaroo in his first game this season while Miels Grice continued his superb goal-kicking form with another four majors.
Meanwhile, South Toowoomba is back in the winner's circle after defeating University 8.16 (64) to 5.10 (40) at USQ Oval.
Accuracy was a problem for both teams in the freezing, windy conditions as they kicked double the number of behinds to goals.
And when the Bombers skipped ahead by three goals at the final change, it proved too much for the Cougars to chase down.
Uni's defeat was a boost for the top-four chances of Warwick and Highfields after both picked up the points at the weekend.
The Redbacks needed a big performance after last weekend's disappointing effort and bounced back with a resounding 20.21 (141) to 4.3 (27) victory over Dalby.
The under-strength Swans were on the back foot from the opening bounce and proved no match for a Warwick side still clinging to the slightest hope of a finals berth.
And Highfields could still sneak into the top four after Lockyer Valley were forced to forfeit their clash at Gatton Showgrounds due to the state of the field.
