Much is spoken about what football teams do on the field on a weekly basis, but what clubs do off the field only seems to get publicity when it is of a negative nature. A number of Peter Jackson VFL are clubs are very active in their local communities, and one club that will this weekend be playing their part in helping raise funds and awareness for the charity Ladder is the Williamstown Football Club.
Through their Development Group – the Liam Picken Academy – Williamstown for the second year running will be supporting Ladder, a charity doing fantastic work to help young people affected by homelessness. After the success of the initiative last year, Williamstown is looking forward to again teaming up with Ladder to tackle youth homelessness.
During their Round 18 home game against Port Melbourne at Burbank Oval, Williamstown will be running a number of fundraising and promotional activities to raise vital funds and awareness for Ladder.
Williamstown Football Manager Chris Dixon said the players in the Development Academy were really keen to make a difference.
“We were lucky enough to have Cam Roberts from Ladder come down to speak to the boys about the issue of Youth Homelessness and the work Ladder does. It really hit home for the boys how fortunate they are and it was great to see the boys keen to make a difference in the community.
“The boys in the Academy are keen to follow on the good work done by Ladder through former and current players such as Mark Bolton, Jobe Watson, Luke Ball and Andrew McLeod,” Dixon explained.
The Development Academy will be running a school clinic for Sacred Heart Primary School in Newport and be asking for a gold coin donation with all proceeds going to Ladder.
Williamstown will also be running the following initiatives that will be undertaken at our home game this Saturday:
• Williamstown FC playing list to donate portion of their match payments to Ladder
• 50% of all money raised on the gate will be donated to Ladder
• All money raised through auction items at President’s Luncheon donated to Ladder
• Players will be roaming around the Ground on match day asking for donations
• Players are raising funds through their workplaces, universities and by approaching
Williamstown FC sponsors
• Players to wear blue and white armbands raising awareness for Ladder
