TRENT SLATTER | THE CHRONICLE | 23 JULY 2012
COOLAROO has lived up to its reputation as the form AFL Darling Downs side after handing South Toowoomba its first loss of the season at Harristown Park on Saturday.
The Roos jumped into first place with a thrilling 15.15 (105) to 16.8 (104) victory in a match that looked destined to be Souths' second draw in as many weeks.
Coolaroo led by 37 points at the final change before Souths fired up with seven goals to one to have the scores locked up inside the final minute.
But the Roos had one last chance for a reply and while the attempt hit the post for a behind, it was enough for them to notch their 11th straight win and end the Bombers' perfect run this season.
Meanwhile, University has all but wrapped up fourth place with an 18.24 (132) to 4.12 (36) victory over Goondiwindi.
Despite some wasted opportunities in front of goal, including a woeful 13 behinds in the third term, the Cougars proved far too strong.
Uni now only needs to win one of its remaining three matches to seal a finals berth.
But Highfields showed they won't be giving up without a fight after upsetting fellow finals hopefuls Warwick 16.15 (111) to 4.5 (29).
The Redbacks sorely missed the presence of midfielder Brendan Iles, who was called into the Queensland Country squad, as Highfields seized every chance to control the ball.
Finally, the Toowoomba Tigers geared up for their charge towards a third straight flag with a 30.21 (201) to 3.6 (24) victory over Lockyer Valley.
